Teachers day 2024: Teacher’s Day is celebrated as the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan the first Vice-President and the second President of India. He was a great Teachers’ Day is annually celebrated on September 5 every year in India. Whereas, World Teachers’ Day is held a month later on October 5.  Teachers day 2024 -Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Philosopher and scholar. Dr Radhakrishnan was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

He was born on September 5, 1888, in the Madras Presidency. A great teacher, Dr Radhakrishnan held teaching posts at the University of Calcutta and Oxford University. He was also an accomplished writer and travelled extensively in the US and Europe giving lectures on intercultural understanding.

When in 1962 Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India, some students visited him and requested to celebrate his birthday on 5th September. He then advised the students to celebrate the day by dedicating it to the teachers. Since then, September 5 started being celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.

Indian culture views the bondage between gurus and shishyas in a very respectful light. Teachers’ Day on September 5 symbolizes celebration not only for the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan but also of toiling and dedication by teachers. It enables students to thank their teachers and allows teachers an opportunity to review themselves so as to create an environment healthy and motivating for the students.

Teacher’s Day is celebrated in every educational institute throughout the country. Students pay respect to their teachers through speeches, songs, and cultural shows. In schools, a trend is seen where senior students play the role of teachers and take junior classes. Students express their gratitude through gifts, cards, and flowers to teachers.
