Some Performances of Para Olympics 2024
In Para Olympics 2024 India may not have won any medal on the first day of the 2024 Paris Para Olympics on Thursday, but there were quite a few notable performances from the country’s athletes. Aruna Singh Tanwar, who had become the first Taekwondo star to feature at a Paralympics in Tokyo three years back, endured a heartbreaking exit in the round of 16 in Paris.
Indian shuttlers and archers stole much of the spotlight as Sukant Kadam and Sheetal Devi impressed the most. Thursday was the day when she topped the women’s individual compound open ranking round at Paris Paralympics. A vast majority during the ranking round, it seemed like Sheetal takes numero uno spot.
Devoid of arms since birth, Devi recorded 703 points in the ranking round to break the then world record of Great Britain’s Phoebe Pine Paterson, who had only managed that score earlier in August.
However, it proved short-lived as Turkey’s Oznur Girdi Cure pulled two 60s in her final attempts to finish with an overall score of 704. For 17-year-old Sheetal though, a score of 703 was her new personal best.
Para Olympics 2024 Some More Points
In a rematch of two summer matchups that the United States won, 61-57 and 70-65, Team USA again nipped Spain, this time 66-56, in a tight Para Olympic opener in Bercy Arena on Thursday afternoon.
“We’re talking about the best of the best right now,” Team USA’s Trevon Jenifer said of the two teams. “This is the biggest tournament we have so we know we’re going to get a team’s best shot
out here, so we had to come out and take care of business.
The game remained close early as the two teams traded the first four baskets before Jacob Williams knocked down back-to-back threes to put the Americans up 10-6 less than four minutes into the game.
Following a second chance basket from Jennifer, Spain connected on a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to just one and nearly took the lead missing the layup to end the opening frame 18-17 in favor of the Americans.
Williams was everywhere on the court scoring eight points and adding two rebounds and two assists in just the first quarter.

The second quarter picked right up where the first left off, as Jenifer scored a quick two points before Spain took the points right back, grabbing its first lead with 5:25 left to play in the period.
While that was Spain’s only lead, the United States wasn’t able to pull away more than two possessions, fighting their way to a 32-29 advantage going into the break.
“Spain is an all-world team,” five time Paralympian and team captain Steve Serio said. “We knew that Spain always brings it. We definitely have a lot of room to grow, but we’ll go back and look at the game tape and get better.”
When Team USA began to pull away, it was in the third quarter, where Serio’s and-one play with 7:36 remaining gave Team USA a 36-29 advantage. Spain continued fighting back but never getting the American lead out of their comfort zone. Jennifer’s fast-break score with 3:01 left in the period extended the lead to eight.
Team USA had a 46-40 lead going into the fourth quarter, and Spain mounted a late rally, but were only down a single possession with over six minutes to go. The Americans would hold on for a 66-56 victory.
Jake Williams had 22 points and seven assists to lead his team, but he says this is only just the beginning.
The win sets Team USA up well for the remainder of the group stage, as they will play the Netherlands on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
